Take-home messages from the IPCC 6th assessment report on Impacts, Adaptation and vulnerability

Gonéri Le Cozannet - BRGM

— -
Gonéri Le Cozannet is research engineer at BRGM, the French Geological Survey. His main research interests are the evaluation of coastal impacts of sea-level rise and of the related uncertainties. He is co-author of the Working Group 2 contribution to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6-WG2). He will present the main take-home messages from this report, with specific insights from the Europe and Mediterranean Region chapters as well as a focus on sea level rise. Key risks in Europe and the Mediterranean include risks to human health and ecosystems due to rising temperatures, food production losses, water scarcity and increased flooding due to heavy rainfalls and sea-level rise. Cascading impacts such as wildfires or disruptions of trade or within the insurance and financial sectors are a significant matter of concern as well. The report shows that adaptation to climate change becomes increasingly challenging above 1,5°C warming, with projected losses and escalating rapidly from 1,5 to 3°C across many human communities, ecosystems and sectors. Yet, there is still a short and rapidly closing window of opportunity to mitigate climate change, adapt to it, restore health ecosystems and achieve the sustainable development goals. This report offers solutions to the world.
